What’s the point of a new year’s Resolution
Happy New Year’s everyone!!!!!
2020 is here, and we are entering a new decade. 😱 Let that settle in for a minute. If you haven’t yet, this is the perfect time to pause, reflect and set a direction for the next year ahead of you. I know some of you have written down your New Year’s resolution and your already working on them and some of you guys don’t want to, and are asking yourselves what’s the point of a New Year’s resolution?
When I was younger the goal was to stay up on New Year’s Eve until midnight. Many times I had failed. Not going to lie. Come on! if you’re being honest you know you’re in the same boat as I am. I just couldn’t keep my eyes open.
By 10 o’clock I was passed out on the couch and my dad would carry me to my room. I would get up the next morning, disappointed that I didn’t make it. Finally one year, I made it. I was able to celebrate and cheer with the rest of the family. I was quite pleased with myself, (pad on the back).
There was a lot of food, drinks, and junk food. Apparently this is a time of the year, I could indulge and eat all the candy I want to as a kid. I LOVE THIS.
As my siblings and I were enjoying ourselves eating and drinking, I heard some chattering going on the background. “Happy New Year!!!!! ” Someone shouted “my New Year’s resolution is to be good to myself”, and then another will say “my New Year’s resolution is to stop eating junk food”. As I shove another handful of skittles down my mouth LOL.
I have never heard of this before, I slowly made my way to my mom and asked her “What is a New Years Resolution?” After she explained, I quickly made my first New Years’ resolution. I want to help more around the house.
Like many traditions out there. How did this one start?
A quick history
The tradition of making new years resolutions started about 4,000 years ago in ancient Babylon. They didn’t have a written calendar the way we have today, but they observed the stars to determine the new year. Which was in late March, the beginning of spring.
The month of January is named after the mythical Roman god Janus. Janus has 2 faces. One facing forward, and one looking back. this emphasizes his ability to look back and also into the future at the same time. Janus was the protector of bridges, doors, gates, beginnings, and endings.
In 153 B.C., the Roman Senate made New Year’s to begin on January 1. In 94 BC when Julius Caesar took the throne. The calendar was adjusted so that January falls to its present-day today. He did this by letting the previous year run for 445 days.
The tradition of making New Year’s resolution started when Julius Caesar was on the throne. Back then people made New Year’s resolution with Good intention. things like being good to one another, volunteering at the church, forgiving one another a.k.a. your enemies,…..
Time to Reflect
Time to look back. This is the best time of the year to pause and reflect on the past 12 months. Look at your accomplishments and also your failures (what did you learn from them).
Most of the time we like to focus on our failures, but I want you to focus on the things that you did right this year. It could be personal or business. write them down, how did you achieve them. How can you apply it to some of the areas that you’re struggling with (if it’s applicable)?
I believe looking in your past is a good way to set the direction of where you wanna be in the next coming years.
Set a direction
Time to look forward. This is the time for us intrapreneurs to dream big. How are we imagining our business in the next coming years? Personally, How do you see yourself by the end of this year? or the following year after that?
Now that you got your dreams and your ambition, it’s time to make a plan on how you’re going to achieve them. So many times people dream big but they don’t take the necessary steps to see their dreams come to reality. Or people make unrealistic goals that they can’t attain. Because of this, they get frustrated and give up and therefore they don’t want to make any New Year’s resolution.
A GOAL WITHOUT A PLAN IS JUST A WISH
I think making a New Year’s resolution is important. You need to know where you’re going. If you don’t have a plan, you don’t know where you’re going to end up. With a plan, you are directing your future.
XOXO

I use to think of this post also, what’s the point of a new year resolution when you can’t even account for the first 30 days. And so I stopped making them.

Excellent information on New Year’s and resolutions. I never knew about Janus and the background behind why we choose to celebrate in this way. I agree that resolutions are important to give guidance and direction to your life.

Making a plan is so important, and so is taking action on the plan you create. Happy New Year!

I love how you provide the history of New Year’s resolutions, and the concept of Janus looking both back and ahead. In a sense, we also look back as we make and move forward with our resolutions — because, in order to want to do something better or different, you need to be honest with yourself about what went on before.
This also gives me encouragement to blog about the concepts of thresholds. I’d taught a spiritual writing class about that but never wrote a post. Now I will! Thanks. I’m glad to have found your blog through Becoming a Blogger!
