Real tips from a real PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP ARTIST for your wedding day

Real tips from a real PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP ARTIST for your wedding day!!

SO you’re getting married? Congrats!! Want to look your BEST on your special day? Here are some real tips from a real professional makeup artist, on how to communicate with your makeup artist to create the perfect look for your wedding day!!

Research Looks….

Before your trial makeup session, take time to scroll through the endless amount of bridal makeup looks on the internet. Keep in mind that the celebrities and models in those pictures look good because you see a COMPLETE look created for them, with all parts working together (ie. the outfit, hair, personal facial features). Also, the pictures are most likely digitally altered and enhanced.

ONLY save the ones that you could see YOURSELF wearing.  If you save every look that you think is ‘pretty’, you will ultimately confuse yourself and your makeup artist.

Be clear on your likes and dislikes with each makeup look you’ve saved as a reference. Oftentimes our clients don’t love every single aspect of the photos they’ve shown us for inspiration. Know how to verbalize what you love about the look, and what you don’t like about it.

Narrow the photos you love down to 2. Clarity is key.

What to wear for your trial makeup session….

Your trial before the wedding day is meant to help you choose the perfect wedding makeup look. Wear something that makes you feel beautiful, as if it were actually your wedding day. Make sure you are wearing the colour that your wedding dress is. The makeup look you’ve chosen might look good with a bright red, but it might not with white!

Whatever you choose to wear, try to avoid looking “edgy” or “comfy” on your trial date. Unless that’s the wedding look you’re going for! It can affect your choices drastically!

Skin care….

Keep it moisturized and keep a good routine a few weeks before the trial and wedding day. Good makeup starts with good skin!  Drink a lot of water to help your body hydrate.

Don’t forget to take good care of your under eye area too, using eye cream at both morning & night. Using eye cream regularly will help you delay the aging process; eliminate fine lines, puffiness, and dark circles. Even when you think your eye cream doesn’t really solve the problem or make you look “younger”, it will at least keep whatever your current condition is at bay – if it is at least providing the right amount of moisture your under eye area needs.

As a makeup artist, I personally prefer to not cake on concealer under the eyes because it may look good at first, but in a few hours, it will start to crack & enhance visible lines and draw even more attention to the flaws. These visible lines may not show up in photos, but in person, it may look quite cake-y. Looking good in photos is important, but I think looking good in person is more important.

*And make sure your eyebrows are groomed for the trial and the wedding day.

And finally,

The hard truth is that your makeup artist is not a mind-reader nor can they dream up a look that you would like. For trials, we are meeting you without your regular everyday makeup done, so we really have no idea about what your personal style is!! Therefore, it’s your job to come in and describe to us WHO YOU ARE and how you want to present yourself on your wedding day. The more we know, the more successful your trial will be, because your artist can then effortlessly create your PERSONAL dream wedding day look!
